A man on the run from police was arrested after a two-hour armed stand-off in a suburban neighbourhood today.
Police saw the 42-year-old man, who was wanted for failing to appear in court, just before 10am in Manurewa, South Auckland.
The man took cover under a house in Mahia Rd.
"When police attempted to take the man into custody he is alleged to have presented a firearm at police and shots were allegedly fired by both police and the man," Counties Manukau police said in a statement.
"Police withdrew and cordoned the area until the armed offenders squad and police negotiation team arrived."
Police told the public to avoid Mahia Rd, Rimu Rd, Christmas Rd and Tawa Cres as a deadlock ensued.
It took nearly two hours of negotiations before the situation was resolved.
The Herald photographer said the alleged offender left in an ambulance that several police cars were escorting.
Police were lifting cordons in the area at 1.08pm.
The man had unspecified injuries but police said they were not life-threatening.
Police said the man would appear in Manukau District Court facing various charges.
The timing of his court appearance depended on the nature of his injuries but a police spokeswoman said it was likely he would appear in court tomorrow.
"Police staff involved in this incident were faced with a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation and acted with great courage and professionalism to ensure the safety of not only themselves and members of the public, but also the offender," Counties Manukau police district commander Superintendent John Tims said.
Police were still looking for a vehicle from which the man fled, a white BMW X3 SUV/station wagon, registration HZQ478.
Police asked anyone with information on the car to call Counties Manukau police on 09 263 2709.
