Armed police were called to Matua, Tauranga after reports of a firearm being discharged.
An NZME reporter said police had been in the area of Tilby Drive and Fergusson Park about 4.30pm.
There was at least one dog unit and what appeared to be road spikes laid out.
A police spokeswoman said police were called about 4pm to Tilby Point after a report of a firearm being discharged into the air. There were no injuries.
Armed police attended as a precaution, and a man was taken into custody.
