Armed police blocked off a number of streets in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden this afternoon.
Armed officers stopped traffic at a number of intersections over a substantial area.
Ambulance officers were also in the area after a call to support the police.
Two helicopters were flying over the scene. It followed what police described as a domestic situation.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing police negotiating over a loud hailer.
Motorists and local residents caught in the area said police would not tell them what was happening.
At just before 3pm, police brought the situation under control. There are no exact details of what happened.
