Armed offenders squad (AOS) members are guarding the entrance to Napier District Court today as six men are due to appear in relation to a gang brawl last week.
The fight, between Mongrel Mob and Black Power members outside the Tamatea Pak 'n Save last Thursday involved hammers, golf clubs and axes.
Two men were taken to hospital with moderate injuries resulting from the fight.
Six people, including some Black Power associates were set to appear in court today, charged with wounding with intent to injure.
Detective Sergeant Brian Schaab told NZPA police had heard there may be some retaliation planned, which was why AOS members had been posted.
"These guys are pretty stupid, but if they try to go through some AOS guys they're really dumb."
It was more a precautionary measure and police were not expecting any trouble, Mr Schaab said.
