A man arrested after armed police were called to what is understood to have been a domestic incident in Whangarei will appear in court today.
Sergeant Daniel Cleaver said police were yesterday notified about a man in an "unstable state" who had access to firearms.
Streets were cordoned off in the suburb of Tikipunga about 5pm while police searched for the man.
About 6.30pm the man, limping and handcuffed, left the area in an ambulance, accompanied by an armed police officer.
Mr Cleaver said the man had been charged with possession of two firearms, possession of ammunition and possession of a stolen vehicle.
