Police dogs overpowered a knife-wielding man in Auckland after he kept officers at bay while holding a female hostage, police say.
A domestic-related incident in the suburb of Grey Lynn this evening escalated leading to the police armed offenders squad being called out, Inspector Barry Smalley of police northern communications said.
Initial reports said the female was rescued by police and the man was finally taken into custody after being overpowered by police dogs.
The 33-year-old man, who had minor injuries, would appear in Auckland District Court tomorrow facing several charges.
No one else was hurt during the 90 minute stand off.
