KEY POINTS:
An architect is concerned about the direction of Wellington's architecture in light of the controversial international passenger terminal planned for Wellington Airport.
"The Rock" is designed to reflect the region's rugged south coast, but critics say it looks more like two pumpkins or something out of the cartoon programme the Flintstones.
Associate Professor Russell Walden from Victoria University's School of Architecture wants the designers sent back to the drawing board for the sake of the city's credibility. He says Wellington has already made too many mistakes in terms of its public architecture and calls Te Papa a national disgrace. He says buildings reflect what a city is about.
"With efforts like this, Wellington will not be taken seriously."
An airport spokeswoman says public opinion will always be divided on such a radical design and work will begin within the month as planned. The two-stage terminal upgrade will cost $53 million.
