KEY POINTS:
APN, publisher of the New Zealand Herald and regional newspapers, is proposing to centralise the subediting of some of its titles at a facility run by a separate company in Auckland.
The publisher believes a combined operation proposed by Australian company Pagemasters could deliver unspecified savings for the newspapers, and the Listener and Aucklander magazines. APN New Zealand chief executive Martin Simons could not confirm the number of jobs to go at the publications, or the total to be created at the central facility.
The EPMU, a union representing some affected subeditors, said the proposal would have a major impact on the quality of news by distancing the subediting from the reporting function.
