The SAS will be pulled from Afghanistan next year for an assignment closer to home - to provide security for the Rugby World Cup, according to reports.
TV3 reported that Willie Apiata and other elite soliders will return to New Zealand in April to assist with counter-terrorism efforts.
Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae said the SAS will work with police leading up to the Rugby World Cup.
"We're in discussions with Martin Snedden and his people about what support we might provide, through to assisting police with counter-terrorism," Lt-Gen Mateparae told TV3.
The SAS are currently part of a multi-national force based in Afghanistan.
