Apartments evacuated over fire

Residents are being evacuated from a central Auckland apartment building after fire and smoke were detected at the property.

Ten fire appliances have been called to the Victopia Apartments on the corner of Victoria and Nelson streets in Auckland's central business district.

A spokesman for the fire service said fire fighters had yet to determine if there was actually a fire but said the sprinklers had been activated and there was extensive water damage in at least part of the 14 storey building.
