Firefighters have brought a blaze at an apartment block in central Auckland under control.
A Fire Service spokeswoman said the fire broke out at 1.15pm on the second story of the Colonial Building on the corner of Durham St West and Queen St.
There were 16 fire engines in attendance at the peak of the fire but were now leaving as they were no longer required.
The fire was in a bedroom, and there had been a lot of smoke on the second floor and extensive water damage, she said.
No-one was in the apartment.
Suzanne Richardson lives on the sixth floor of the building and was coming home from work at the time of the blaze.
"I just came around the corner to see black smoke, fire engines and heaps of people," she told nzherald.co.nz
