A lawnmower at the centre of a mass brawl at an A&P show in Otago has been sold for $1030 on Trade Me.

A fight broke out when the custom-built ride-on was shunted by a competing vehicle at the Lake Hayes annual mower race.

The driver, Wanaka man Willy Boyd, was photographed punching the opponent responsible square in the nose - to the delight of the crowd.

The owner, Queenstown man Mark McLellan, said his once-prized possession was being sold to raise money for the trust that put on the event.

"We're just showing a bit of goodwill. I'm trying to end something - that perhaps shouldn't have happened in the first place - with a bit of a laugh," he said.

Prospective bidders were warned the mower could not cut grass, had little material value and could cost several hundred dollars to transport.

McLellan follows a well-beaten track where enterprising Kiwis cash-in on their famous-for-five-minutes curios by auctioning them online.

Last year a water bottle tossed away by tween pop star Justin Beiber sold for $825.

And bids for "the" handbag used in the legendary Tana Umaga stoush reached $22,800 in 2006.

Trade Me spokesman Paul Ford said the mower auction was closely monitored to ensure all bids were genuine.
