KEY POINTS:
Plans for a $25 million revamp of Auckland's Aotea Square have been unveiled.
The redevelopment of the central city square is part of an $80 million project, which includes repairing and strengthening the underground Civic Carpark. Three quarters of Aotea Square is on the roof of the carpark.
The Auckland City Council wants to develop the precinct into an arts, cultural and recreational hub in the city. It will be able to cater to concerts for up to 20,000 people.
The Independent Urban Design Panel has some reservations about the plan, and has recommended changes. The council has now opened it up for public consultation, but wants the upgrade to start in November, so it can be finished before the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
