A man is to appear in court after the armed offenders squad (AOS) was called out in Motueka, near Nelson, yesterday after reports of a man with a machete.
Police had been sent to a property on Thorp St around 6.10pm after a domestic incident was reported.
A Nelson police spokesman said a man drove off before police arrived and was spotted soon after, carrying the machete, on High Street.
AOS and police dogs were called to help search for the man and a 19-year-old unemployed man was arrested at 9.20pm.
He has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and is being held in custody before an appearance in Nelson District Court today.
Police said nobody was injured during the incident and there was no risk to the public.
