A man who sparked a Christmas Day armed offenders squad callout in Matata has been bailed but banned from most of the small Bay of Plenty seaside town.
In the Whakatane District Court on Wednesday, Justice Gary McGuigan told Paul Travis Andrew Paterson, 45, he was allowed to drive directly through Matata, 23km northwest of Whakatane, but not stop or linger there.
He was also barred from suburban Hamilton.
Paterson told the judge he had "never been banned from a whole town before", and asked to be allowed in to his former residence in Matata to collect personal belongings.
He said his things were "hidden around the house so nobody can steal them" but was told someone else would have to collect them.
Paterson faces three charges relating to an incident in which he allegedly threatened family members while armed with a knife and a gun.
The Tauranga-based armed offenders' squad was called, but Paterson was arrested by police as he tried to leave the scene before the squad arrived.
He will reappear in court on January 27 charged with intentionally damaging the window of one female complainant, threatening to kill another and assaulting a third.
In court he was ordered not to associate with the complainants and a number of other people.
