Wellington's Armed Offenders Squad was alerted on Monday after a report of a firearm being discharged in Masterton.
Masterton police Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said police were called at midday to Cameron Cres, where someone reported "the sound of a firearm being fired".
An initial team was sent to cordon off the area and Wellington AOS called, but were stood down when the situation was resolved, Mr Burr said. The weapon turned out to be a BB gun.
A 36-year old man has been charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm.
