Another small earthquake shook the Hasst area last night, the second in that region in five days and the fourth in a string of small quakes in the South Island.
The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences GeoNet Data Centre in Lower Hutt said today that last night's quake measured 3.9 on the Richter scale and was 30km southeast of Haast. It was at a depth of five km and recorded at 11.51pm.
On Boxing Day a 3.2 tremor was noticed at 10.05am and centred 30km southwest of Haast at a depth of five km.
On Friday, Christmas Eve festivities in Ranfurly, Central Otago, were briefly interrupted by a small earthquake.
The tremor, measuring 3.9 on the Richter Scale, struck at 9.44pm and was "very noticeable".
The earthquake was centred 10km south of Ranfurly at a depth of 12km.
An earthquake measuring 3.5 was recorded at 5.45am on Christmas Day was felt in North Canterbury. It was centred 10km west of Greta Valley at a depth of 12km.
