KEY POINTS:
Frightened residents of Rotorua's Miller St quickly rang police when they feared a gang fight was brewing, preventing what could have been another violent dust up.
The standoff happened outside a Black Power party in the suburban street on Saturday night.
Acting Sergeant Roger Schreuder said those at the party were "howling" Black Power gang calls and chants which were heard by Mongrel Mob associates at a nearby house.
The Mongrel Mob associates walked to the Black Power house where there was a standoff on the street.
Mr Schreuder said residents heard the commotion and quickly called police who arrived before any violence broke out. No one was arrested.
"Because we were called quickly police were able to stop any major incident."
The standoff follows two other gang scraps in the past week.
Western Heights residents watched eight young men from opposing gangs attack each other with bats, golf clubs and long poles just after 10am on Brookland Rd on Tuesday.
The fight had broken up by the time police arrived and no arrests were made.
That followed a nasty brawl on Sunday last week on Bellingham Cres in Fordlands involving representatives from the Mongrel Mob and Black Power. This resulted in Mr Schreuder being bitten by a pitbull and another police officer kicked in the head.
About eight police struggled to put a man in a police van, leading to four people being arrested for disorderly behaviour and resisting police.
