Weather forecasters say another funnel cloud is possible over Auckland today.
Yesterday a dramatic funnel cloud drifted over the southern part of Auckland, scaring many people who thought it was a tornado.
Weatherwatch.co.nz said another funnel cloud could happen today over Auckland as large convergence clouds built - today's cloud was likely to be between central Auckland and the Waitakere Ranges to the west.
Spokesman Philip Duncan said yesterday's funnel cloud was caused by a mixture of cooler air and warmer air moving in different directions at different altitudes causing the clouds to rotate and produce a funnel cloud.
A funnel cloud was not a tornado, he said.
A tornado formed when a funnel cloud connected with the ground but not all funnel clouds became tornados.
