Another arrest over alleged serious assault at Gisborne bar

Police have now made five arrests in relation to an alleged serious assault incident at the Smash Palace bar in the industrial subdivision in early August. They are still keen to receive any cellphone coverage of the incident.

Police have made a further arrest and are seeking three other men after an alleged serious assault at the Smash Palace bar on August 2.

They have now taken four patched Mongrel Mob gang members and a gang associate into custody.

“We have now also arrested a 23-year-old patched member of the gang, and like the others he has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” Detective Sergeant Eric Hunter said.

“We are still looking for three others.”

The first four men appeared in the Gisborne District Court on Monday and were remanded in custody to appear again on Wednesday.

Police allege the three victims were kicked, punched, stomped and hit with weapons.

They suffered moderate injuries, including a broken finger, lacerations and abrasions. One was also knocked unconscious for a significant time.

Hunter on Monday said police were still seeking footage of the incident and believe people recorded the incident on their cellphones.

An online portal has also been set up for people to upload photos or videos directly to the investigation team.
