KEY POINTS:
Titirangi duck lover Barbara Vaux is sick of scraping ducks off the road outside her house and now fears the toll will double after being told to remove warning signs from the front of her property.
For about three years Mrs Vaux has put up signs outside her gate alerting motorists to ducks crossing the road from her property to get to a stream that runs alongside South Titirangi Rd.
After a complaint from the public the Waitakere City Council has told Mrs Vaux she must remove the signs, which are illegal.
She complied yesterday as she did not want to risk a $1000 fine, but is upset that more of the wild ducks will end up run over.
"Vehicles come speeding down this road, they toot on the horn but don't realise the young ducks can't fly. I'm sick of picking them up and burying them."
In one case a bus ran over nine ducks, killing them all.
Mrs Vaux said she had spent a fortune on veterinarian bills trying to save injured ducks.
"They are hit and runs, the drivers just leave the ducks injured."
She also takes some birds to a local wildlife rescue centre where they heal before being released.
Mrs Vaux's gripe is not so much with the council, which was restricted by the rules in the district plan, but the person who complained.
"Until then all I had got was positive feedback and lots of hugs and kisses for my efforts to protect them."
Mrs Vaux has lived in South Titirangi Rd for 38 years and is concerned about the general traffic speed. One motorist was clocked going 140 km/h.
