A man who armed himself with scissors to get even after being beaten up was convicted in the Masterton District Court yesterday of possessing an offensive weapon.
Callum David Ryan had gone to his parents' and a sibling's house about 3am on September 15, after he "had apparently been involved in a violent altercation and sustained injuries", said police prosecutor Sergeant Tom Andrews.
Ryan had got up about 7am and armed himself with scissors, saying he was going to do something to those who had hurt him, and lamented that he could not find his knife. He was restrained by family members, who would not let him leave the property and called police.
Ryan told police he was "hung over, and did not remember any of the incident of being assaulted the previous evening".
Judge Barbara Morris said it was fortunate Ryan's family intervened, and that despite the assault, "to try and respond with a weapon is obviously making things far worse".
