Why is the NZ Herald app requesting permission to access features on my Android?

When you install the NZ Herald app on your Android, your phone or tablet should let you know that the app is asking for your permission to access information or use features from your Android. Almost all apps need certain permissions to run on Android, and we use these permissions to run features in the app.

Below is a list of some of the permissions we request and an example of how we use each one.

If you've already installed our app, you can find a list of the permissions the app uses in your phone's Applications Manager, or by visiting the Play Store and clicking Installed.

Read phone stats and identity

This is so the app can be interrupted when, for example, you need to take a call

Take a picture and videos

This allows you to use the app's in-built QR Code Scanner

Approximate location (network-based)

This means we can deliver the weather and offers for your location

Modify or delete content of USB storage

This stores & updates all the articles for offline reading

Full network access

This allows the app to access the internet to update the articles

Control vibration

This allows the Breaking News alert notifications to vibrate

Prevent phone from sleeping

This is to prevent your screen turning off whilst the app is open (and you are reading an article)
