KEY POINTS:
Major oil companies dropped fuel prices by 6c a litre in New Zealand today, a move the Automobile Association described as "excellent news".
Shell spokeswoman Jackie Maitland told NZPA tonight 91 octane petrol had dropped to 189.9c a litre, 95 octane to 195.9c and diesel to 147.9c.
It was the second fall in fuel prices in a fortnight.
On September 17 the companies dropped petrol prices by 4c a litre and diesel by 6c.
Automobile Association director of motoring affairs Mike Noon said a drop today would not have been predicted and "it means that they're (oil companies) moving quite quickly, which is good".
"From a motorist's perspective a 6c a litre decrease is a very significant decrease and it is excellent news.
"There's enough doom and gloom out there at the moment in the economy and everywhere else, and it will be very, very welcome for motorists to get 6c a litre reduction in petrol and diesel.
"I think they'll be very happy."
