Corey Docherty is believed to have fallen in the same alley in which an English tourist died six years ago.
Queenstown police believe an American tourist who died in Dunedin Hospital received his "significant" injuries as a result of a fall in the same alleyway that claimed the life of an English tourist six years ago.
Police said they were investigating Corey Richard Docherty's death on behalf of the coroner, but initial indications were he had fallen.
The 22-year-old from Marblehead, Massachusetts, was found semiconscious with "significant" head and spinal injuries in an alleyway beside Loco Cantina and Base Discovery Lodge about 9.30am on Friday.
Police said they believed Mr Docherty died of a stroke on Tuesday.
His death had been referred to the coroner.
A Base Discovery Lodge spokeswoman said she was unable to make any comment because of the police investigation.
A "Give Forward" page, set up after news of Mr Docherty's accident spread, had raised $11,645 to go towards medical costs for "one of the best, most lovable and adventurous guys that one could know".
"We all love Dickey Dock and our prayers are with him. They say a smile lights up a room and he definitely has that smile," a comment said.
In June 2009, a 25-year-old English tourist was found dead in the same alleyway.
At the inquest for James Patrick Smith of Bromley, England, the coroner heard he had gone to the rear of the alleyway after being asked to leave the Altitude bar (now Loco), climbed a fire escape to the lodge's top floor and tried to climb on to the roof before falling 9.6m to his death.
His blood alcohol level was 234mg - almost three times the legal driving limit.
In 2008, Invercargill electrician Shaun Bernard Hogan, 24, fell to his death at the Glebe Apartments after climbing to the roof after a night of drinking in the resort.
James Teague, 19, also died at the Glebe in July last year, receiving fatal injuries after falling from a balcony on to a concrete car park.
Less than a month later, a 42-year-old Australian tourist was seriously injured after falling 4m on to cobbled tiles in the Steamer Wharf, when he fell from a stair balustrade in a courtyard.
