American tourist dies after road smash

An American tourist has died in hospital after a head-on crash between two cars in Northland yesterday.

She was Rita Zaross, 62.

She was one of three people trapped and critically injured in the crash near Taipa, northeast of Kaitaia

They were freed by emergency services and flown to hospital.

Police said the dead woman's relatives had been told of her death by the American Embassy.

No details were available on the two injured people.
