A former ambulance officer who indecently assaulted patients in the back of his vehicle was preying on sick and injured women who were at his mercy, police say.
Detective Sergeant Andy King, of Auckland City police, said the 35-year-old former St John officer abused the trust the public placed in ambulance officers and had cast a shadow over others in the industry who did an outstanding job.
The man, who has interim name suppression, was found guilty yesterday by a jury at the Auckland District Court on six counts of indecent assault. Four charges related to a schoolgirl who had been injured in a car crash.
Two other charges related to two other women. He was found not guilty on four other indecent assault charges and one charge of sexual violation.
The man was remanded onbail until sentencing next month.
Mr King told the Herald he was disappointed the man was not found guilty on all charges butwas happy that he would be punished.
"We've got to abide by what the jury finds."
He praised the women who came forward during the inquiry.
"There has been a huge breach of trust ... these were sick and injured women who were at his mercy."
