One person was seriously injured in a crash involving an ambulance and two cars near Rotorua this afternoon.
St John northern communications team manager James Ihimaera said the accident happened about 3.30pm just on State Highway 5 just south of Rotorua.
One person, who had been trapped in a car, had been taken Rotorua hospital with serious injuries, he told NZPA.
The driver of the ambulance, which was not carrying a patient, escaped injury.
Police said two vehicles crashed head-on, then a third crashed into pile-up.
