The incident, caught on film by one of his mates in the back of the cab, took place early on a Sunday morning after a night of drinking between March and May 2013.
But it did not make headlines until August when the video was posted online.
The car-surfing video, which went viral on social media and featured on international news sites, shows Bennett climbing out of the vehicle's passenger-side window and precariously clinging to the Reliable Cabs sign on the roof of the car.
Bennett's lawyer Gerry Skinner said disqualification would cause serious issues for his client, who was looking to get his heavy-vehicle licence for his work in the construction industry.
Judge Hinton took that into consideration and said "notwithstanding the thrill seeking", that the defendant seemed like a "reasonable sort of individual".
He was less impressed with the 26-year-old when revealing his guilty verdict last month.
"I've taken into account your pride in posting on the internet the video footage. Your classification of yourself as a sort of stuntman . . . all that pointed to your recklessness," he said.
"It seems to me self-evident that it was a wholly hazardous act that put others at risk."
But the judge said Bennett's probation report was a positive one and he appeared to have learned his lesson.
"While you'll probably always be attracted to thrill seeking, they probably won't be as risky and hazardous as this one," he said.
Bennett said he had meant no harm and though Judge Hinton said there could have been "catastrophic consequences", he accepted the man's remorse.
Outside court the wannabe stuntman was as animated as ever, saying the driving ban was harsh.
"But you do the crime, you do the time," he said, before strutting to a waiting vehicle.
