KEY POINTS:
A substantial invoice will be presented to the skipper of the Alvei, when it arrives in New Zealand this week. The vessel was the subject of a major search operation involving an Air Force Orion, after it went missing en route from Vanuatu with a crew of nine.
It had not been heard from since November 13, because it was sailing with its radio switched off. Maritime Safety officials are fuming. They say while no regulations have been broken, it is bad seamanship and the skipper will receive that message loud and clear when he arrives.
The Alvei is expected to sail into Opua in Northland.
