"Clearly she's not well and there needs to be some further assessment of her," Ms Wickliffe said.
Judge Claire Ryan said the accused's mental health outweighed the interests of open justice in this instance.
Mason, 27, was taken in by Alyssa's parents, Scott and Sam Barker, after they found out she was sleeping on the streets.
Two days later she allegedly abducted the baby and took her to associates in west Auckland.
Police said a Swanson woman who watched television news Saturday night recognised the alleged abductor and Alyssa as the two people staying with her.
Mr and Mrs Barker told reporters yesterday they took Mason in because they wanted to help her.
Mason is the former girlfriend of Mrs Barker's cousin and was in a car with him when he died in an accident about 10 years ago.
"I don't know her or her history but from what I picked up when she was at the house, she wasn't too well, not quite right, but not to the extent [she would do] this sort of thing," Mr Barker said.
During the 36 hours Alyssa was missing her parents feared the worst.
The day she disappeared, Mrs Barker was looking after her 3-month-old daughter, Kashine, and could see Mason walking with Alyssa outside.
When they didn't come inside she wondered what was happening and called police.
Now the parents want to know what happened while Alyssa was with Mason.
"There are things crossing our mind we want to know - peace-of-mind sort of things - but we haven't had the chance or opportunity to find out those things," Mr Barker said.
Alyssa seemed unaware of her ordeal and was her usual bubbly self.
"She hasn't changed - nothing's changed," her father said. "She's a very happy baby. She wakes up laughing and goes to sleep laughing."
