Alleged burglar and kidnapper shot by police appears in court

A man who was shot by police in central Whanganui last week has appeared in court this morning.

Wattie Adolf Kahu appeared in the Whanganui District Court facing charges including burglary and kidnapping.

Charges related to using an imitation firearm to prevent arrest were withdrawn by police.
Kahu entered no plea.

The 49-year-old limped in and out of the dock, muttered something towards the public gallery and waved as he left.

Judge David Cameron remanded Kahu in custody to reappear on April 12 for pleas to be entered.
