It's time for Wairarapa's top cricketers to stand up and be counted.
That's the message from selection convener Mark Brown after his senior men's side were beaten outright by an innings and eight runs in their Hawke Cup elimination fixture with Wanganui at Wanganui over the weekend.
Brown accepts losing the toss and having to bat first on a wicket damp enough at one end to delay the start of the first day's play by a couple of hours was always likely to put Wairarapa on the back foot but he is adamant they were more the victims of their own inadequacies.
"There were too many cheap dismissals in both innings and you couldn't say we bowled terribly well either," he said. "It was a poor performance whichever way you look at it."
Wairarapa's first innings could hardly have got away to a worse start with the first two wickets falling without a run being scored and the third with just four runs on the board. In the end they were all out for a paltry 101 with only opener Brock Price showing much in the way of resistance with a gritty 31.
The Wanganui reply was in direct contrast to the Wairarapa effort with several good partnerships being formed as they worked their way through to a healthy 311.
The Wairarapa attack struggled to maintain a consistent line and length with perhaps medium pacer Dane Buchanan being the pick of them in that regard. He finished with two wickets while the best return came from spinner Steve Coleman who took 4-80.
Wairarapa's second innings batting performance was only marginally better than their first. They reached 202 there, thanks mainly to a valuable partnership between two of their most experienced campaigners in John Peters and Sam Curtis. Peters made 62 and Peters 42 while the other score of any note was Dean van Deventer's 22.
Brown was "very disappointed" at Wairarapa coming away from what had seemed to be a winnable game without any points, thereby dashing hopes of earning themselves a Hawke Cup challenge this season.
"We should have done better, much better," he said. "Yes, some players might feel aggrieved at the part the pitch played in them getting out but overall it was poor play rather than the conditions which got them out, and that's not good enough."
Wairarapa still have two Hawke Cup elimination matches against Manawatu and Hawke's Bay to play at home early in the New Year and Brown said he would be stressing the importance for squad members to "stand up and be counted" in those games.
"They have to show they deserve to be there, not too many of them have come anywhere near that yet," he said.
Meanwhile, Rathkeale College scored an upset 36-run win over Red Star in their Umpire's Cup senior inter-club cricket match played at Rathkeale on Saturday.
Two of their in-form batsmen in Ben Foster and Harry Greenwood were integral parts of a Rathkeale batting effort which saw them all out for 200. Foster struck five fours in his 48 before being run out while Greenwood was even more assertive in his approach, smashing six fours and one six in his 44.
Red Star tried seven bowlers and Daniel Stoneley, D. Geffen and Troy Burling all picked up two wickets, Stoneley finished with 2-41 and Geffen 2-27 from their 10 overs while Burling had just the four overs and took 2-22.
The Red Star innings never got any traction until Geffen and Jarred Watt came together in an entertaining eighth wicket partnership. Geffen hit five fours and a six in his 44 and Watt three fours in his 26 and they were the catalysts to Stars reaching 164.
Jamie Holmes was the most successful of the Rathkeale bowlers, taking 3-30 from his 10 overs, while A. Morrison finished with 2-24 from six overs.
Runs were hard to come by in the other Umpire's Cup match played at the Park Oval which saw Lansdowne beat Greytown by three wickets.
Greytown won the toss and batted first, being all out for just 121 of which Mark Chyilds made 27, Richard Tosswill 23 and Hayden Spierling 22. Lansdowne reached their target for the loss of seven wickets, Chris Jefferies top scoring with 37. Bowling for Greytown, Spierling took 2-28 and Richard Pope 2-18.
