Hockey Wairarapa is gearing up for a community working bee on the pavilion at their Trust House complex at Clareville.
The aim over a three-day period from March 5-7 is to close in the top storey of the two-storey building with Hockey Wairarapa president Linday Annear confirming yesterday that all the planning had been done and materials ordered.
He said businesses throughout the Wairarapa had been extremely generous in donating materials for the pavilion while many in the hockey community had provided skilled labour free for the project, stage one of which had been completed last year. ''We had fantastic support from so many people for stage one and we are confident it will be the same for the stage two build,'' Annear said, adding that the challenge for the community working bee would be to have the top storey totally enclosed and water tight within the three days. To make this happen, a team of about 100 people will be involved, ranging from carpenters, labourers, handymen and, of course, caterers providing food. Those willing to help should register now through Hockey Wairarapa by phoning 3798133.
Annear said the pavilion would be finished in time to host the national under-16 tournament in July. This will be the first Hockey NZ tourney held in Wairarapa on the artificial turf, two of which are now available at Clareville.
''Hockey is incredibly strong in the Wairarapa and we aim to see that continue,'' Annear said. ''We want to make things ideal for players and spectators and we are well on the way to doing that.''
