Meanwhile, 24-year-old Luatua, instead of retracing his footsteps, had resorted to social media requesting the public's help.
"On a down buzz though, I lost my wallet [sad face] If anyone finds it, Iv got one of my All Blacks Jersey lined up, it's be signed #HelpABrotherOut," he wrote on Twitter early yesterday morning.
Although the message was re-tweeted dozens of times by fans wanting to spread the word, it was a call from Luatua's bank yesterday morning that solved the mystery of his missing wallet.
Mr Sharma had returned to work to find the wallet had not been claimed.
"I couldn't find any type of contact number in his wallet so I thought I better call the bank with his card number."
"About 20 or 30 minutes after I called them this guy came in and gave me a T-shirt. He usually has this beard so I couldn't recognise it was Steven.
"He said, 'Thanks, you're a life saver'. It was such a nice gesture from him. It was a really awesome experience, I wasn't expecting him."
Luatua also took to Twitter and Instagram to thank Mr Sharma, and posted a photo of the pair with the jersey.
"As promised, All Blacks Jersey for my wallet. This guy didn't even know I had it lined up. Genuine good guy. Thanks," he wrote.
Mr Sharma said he was happy to help.
"I am just glad he got his wallet back because he's got all sorts of cards in there, so I am glad somebody else didn't get it.
"Anyone would have done that here though, it's New Zealand."
