KEY POINTS:
Alcohol may have been a factor in a three-car accident that closed Ash St in Avondale, a major arterial route to West Auckland, for several hours yesterday.
Two people had to be cut from their 4WD vehicle after it hit two cars just before 2pm. One suffered critical injuries but Auckland City Hospital later said the person's condition had improved to serious.
A St John spokesman said two other people from one of the other vehicles suffered moderate injuries. The police serious crash unit has appealed for witnesses.
