A 24-year-old Masterton builder was shocked to find he was twice the legal alcohol limit when stopped by police.
Before Judge Peter Hobbs in Masterton District Court last week, Nicholas Ian McGovern pleaded guilty to drink driving. Prosecutor Sergeant Jodie Lawrence said McGovern was stopped by police in Masterton about 1am on Sunday, May 4, and he blew an alcohol reading of 800mcg per litre of breath.
The legal limit for an adult driver is 400mcg. Defence lawyer Ian Hard said his client was most surprised and shocked by the high reading.
Judge Hobbs convicted McGovern and fined him $800 and disqualified him from driving for six months.
