Alcohol and drugs were the main factors behind a large number of domestic violence cases dealt with by police on Christmas day, Women's Refuge said today.
At least 40 cases of domestic violence were dealt with by North Island police, with more than 30 of them in Wellington.
Women's Refuge chief executive Merepeka Raukawa-Tait said alcohol and drugs were a dangerous mix at family get-togethers at Christmas and drunks should be kept out of the home.
She said the number of domestic violence cases attended by police on Christmas Day also indicates people are now more prepared to report abuse.
