An exhausted southern royal albatross is recuperating at the Northpower Bird Recovery Centre in Maunu, Whangarei, after being battered by heavy winds off Northland's west coast last week.
The male bird, estimated to be two or three years old, landed on Ripiro Beach, near Glinks Gully, on Christmas Eve, worn out.
Centre manager Robert Webb said it would rest for a few days. The albatross, probably from the Auckland Islands, was the second at the centre in 16 years.
