Smoke alarms were installed in a house which went up in flames in South Auckland early this morning but were not working.
A person died in the fire at Pamir Rd in Papatoetoe.
The Fire Service was alerted at 3.30am by another person living in the home but when firefighters arrived, a fierce blaze was burning in one of the bedrooms and the house was heavily smoke-logged.
Fire Safety officers will sift through the rubble this morning to establish the cause of the fire.
