The results of a post mortem on Henderson toddler Aisling Symes are consistent with drowning, police have revealed.
Police last night found the two-year-old's body in the stormwater drain at 5 Longburn Rd, about 20m from the home of Aisling's deceased grandparents at No 7, from which she went missing last Monday.
Inspector Gary Davey said he was unable to comment on the specific details of the autopsy but there was no evidence of injury. Aisling's body has been released to her family and the two-year-old's death has been referred to the coroner.
"Aisling's death is devastating for her family and for everyone who knew and loved her. Police, along with other members of the community, are also deeply saddened," Mr Davey said.
Police expect to complete this afternoon a detailed scene examination of the drainpipe where Aisling was found.
Earlier this afternoon, Aisling's uncle, David Ball, described her loss as "unbearable", but said the family had been overwhelmed by messages of support, gifts and flowers.
He said the family were trying to make sense of their loss.
"The loss of Aisling is unbearable. We have, however, some sense of resolution in that Aisling has been found," Mr Ball said.
"It is hard to imagine a life without her, without her infectious smiles and lovely nature."
Mr Ball thanked police who he said could not have done any more for the family.
"Police have been resolute in their efforts to find Aisling.
"They have been professional and the humility they have shown to us has really touched our family."
He said the coming days will be difficult and a funeral service has yet to be arranged for Aisling.
A cousin of Aisling's father Alan, Wymond Symes, said the family was "struggling to deal with the awful loss of a beautiful daughter, sister, niece and family member".
"No words can describe Angela and Alan's pain and anguish.
"This past week has been a traumatic ordeal for us all," Wymond Symes said.
He also thanked police who he said could not have done any more and went to "extraordinary lengths to find Aisling".
