A South Wairarapa man can be grateful Life Flight's Westpac rescue helicopter is indifferent to roads closed to snow.
The man, from Bidwills Cutting Rd, required an urgent airlift to Wellington after suffering a suspected heart attack yesterday morning.
Featherston fire crew established a landing site at Tauherenikau Race Course, which required them to use a bolt-cutter to get the gates open for the ambulance.
On arrival the man was stabilised in the ambulance before being transported to the waiting helicopter.
Life Flight crewman Dave Greenberg said the road journey to Wellington would not have been possible because of snow, but the nature of the emergency meant they would have been called out anyway.
