A twin engined aircraft is believed to have crashed on Mt Egmont, also known as Mt Taranaki.
Police confirmed that at 10.15am today radar contact was lost with a Piper Seneca, believed to have two people aboard.
It is believed the aircraft has crashed on the south-west slopes of the mountain.
Rescue teams were being mobilised. At present thick cloud was preventing an aerial search of the mountain.
