An Air New Zealand flight to Hawaii has been forced to return to Auckland this afternoon.
The plane had to burn off fuel, so it flew back through the eastern Bay of Plenty to airspace east of Cape Reinga before returning to Auckland.
The aircraft had a suspected generator defect and engineers would assess it, Air New Zealand spokeswoman Emma Field said.
Flight NZ10, which was supposed to go to Honolulu, left shortly after 11am and landed back in Auckland at 3:23pm.
"The decision was made to return to Auckland where full engineering support is available at Air New Zealand's Engineering and Maintenance base," Ms Field added.
