An air force passenger jet made an emergency landing on one engine at Whenuapai air base in Auckland this morning.
The Boeing 757 crew reported a fault in the port engine about 11am which could not be rectified.
Air Force spokeswoman Danielle Coe said the engine was shut down and the aircraft circled the base for about an hour to burn off fuel.
There was a full turnout of emergency services at the air base but the Boeing landed safely on one engine about midday.
The air force said later the problem was not thought to have been in the engine but was thought to have been in the throttle or fuel system.
Ms Coe said the aircraft should be back in action within a day or two.
