An Air Force Hercules left Whenuapai yesterday to help bring relief to the worst-hit areas.
The aircraft was expected to arrive in Darwin at midnight, and its crew will work with the Australian Air Force.
Wing Commander Tony Davies said the RNZAF had some tsunami experience from Papua New Guinea about six years ago but this would be far worse.
Squadron Leader Darryn Webb said two crews were sent because it was expected the Hercules would be flying 16 hours a day. Six maintenance personnel and four cargo loaders are also on board.
Squadron Leader Webb said the Air Force was always on standby at this time of year because of the cyclone season.
The Hercules could carry up to 100 people.
