The Government has confirmed it will disband the air combat arm of the Defence Force at the end of the year.
Defence Minister Mark Burton said New Zealand cannot afford modern combat aircraft and the weaponry needed to equip them, and also maintain adequate army and navy capabilities.
The Air Force will instead concentrate on maritime patrol and air transport.
With regard to the Navy, the two Anzac frigates will continue in service and there will be a new patrol craft. The HMNZS Charles Upham will be sold.
