A programme launched by Women in Technology is aiming to increase the number of women working in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry by 500 per cent in 10 years.
Of the 41,000 workers in the industry in 2001, Statistics New Zealand estimates that just over 10,000 were women.
Women in Technology wants to attract 50,000 extra women to the field.
Jeannie Bathgate, a Women in Technology board member says IT is a challenging industry and a foundation for many businesses.
"With the launch of the extended programme, successful women from all backgrounds should be more attracted to become part of the IT industry."
