A woman stabbed in the buttock with a needle or syringe in Porirua on Sunday faces a three-week wait for blood test results.
Porirua police said the Scottish woman feared she may have caught Aids or hepatitis from the injury.
She was celebrating her last night in New Zealand after visiting her brother in Porirua when the incident occurred.
The woman was dancing at Selby's Bar in Lyttelton Ave around 2 am when she felt what seemed like a pinch on her behind. The wound later began to hurt, turn numb and bleed. A doctor determined the puncture was made by a needle or syringe.
Police wanted to hear from people who had had a similar experience, and they also wanted the stabber to come forward, to "eliminate any sinister overtones."
"It may just be someone playing a practical joke."
