Two magnitude 4 earthquakes struck Christchurch overnight - one last night and another this morning - following a relatively quake-free day for the Garden City.
A magnitude 4.3 aftershock hit at 10.48pm, 10km east of Christchurch, off the coast of South New Brighton, at a depth of 10km.
GNS Science received reports the jolt was felt widely across Christchurch.
A magnitude 4.4 aftershock hit at 4.45am, and was centred 20km northeast of Christchurch off Waimairi Beach, at a depth of 15km.
GNS Science said the aftershocks from last Friday's two large jolts are expected to die off quickly, like they did after the June 13 quakes, rather than persist for weeks as they did after the February 22 quake.
